Championing Epilepsy Awareness, Care, and Empowerment in Malawi

Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation is a registered non-profit organization based in Chikwawa, Malawi, dedicated to improving the lives of people living with epilepsy. We provide free access to antiepileptic medication, professional diagnosis, psychosocial counseling, awareness education, and life-changing vocational training. By tackling stigma, misinformation, and lack of care in underserved communities, we are restoring dignity and creating opportunities for over 2,500 individuals and families affected by epilepsy.

About Us

At Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation, we are a registered non-profit organization based in Goma Village, Ngabu, Chikwawa District, Malawi. Founded in 2019 by Chifundo Petro, who was inspired by his sister’s journey with epilepsy, our foundation is dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding epilepsy while improving access to healthcare, education, and economic empowerment for affected individuals.

We believe that every person living with epilepsy deserves dignity, respect, and equal opportunities—regardless of their background or condition. Through our comprehensive programs, we reach underserved communities with free antiepileptic medication, professional diagnosis, psychological counseling, community outreach, and vocational training. To date, we have supported over 2,500 individuals living with epilepsy and continue to expand our impact through strategic partnerships and grassroots action.

Our Programs

At Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation, our programs are designed to transform the lives of individuals living with epilepsy through medical support, education, counseling, and community empowerment. We focus on addressing the urgent needs of underserved populations in Malawi by making epilepsy care accessible, inclusive, and holistic.

Epilepsy Clinics and Free Medication

We run an Epilepsy Centre equipped to diagnose and treat individuals with epilepsy using professional tools like EEG (Electroencephalogram).
Through our clinics:

  • Patients receive free antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) near their homes

  • Over 600 patients have been treated, including 200 children now seizure-free and back in school

  • We partner with the Chikwawa District Health Office to ensure consistent drug supply and professional care

Community Outreach & Awareness Campaigns

Epilepsy is often misunderstood in Malawi, leading to discrimination and stigma. Our awareness programs aim to change that by:

  • Partnering with schools, colleges, churches, and communities to educate people on epilepsy causes, triggers, and first aid

  • Conducting biweekly outreach sessions, reaching over 400 individuals monthly

  • Using media platforms (radio, SMS, TV, and social media) to reach a broader audience

Psychological Counseling Program

Living with epilepsy can be emotionally challenging. That’s why we offer:

  • Confidential counseling sessions at our epilepsy centre

  • Home visits by professional psychologists, offering personalized support and guidance

  • Weekly three-hour sessions to promote mental well-being for patients and their caregivers

Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School

As part of our commitment to inclusive education, we established the Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School:

  • A safe and welcoming space for all learners, especially those with disabilities

  • Learners with disabilities attend for free

  • Focused on academic success, life skills, and self-worth in a stigma-free environment

Mentorship Programs for Youth

Our mentorship initiative focuses on shaping confident, informed young people by:

  • Working with neurotypical learners in special schools

  • Educating youth (ages 10–13) on drug abuse, peer pressure, and healthy life choices

  • Reaching 200+ students monthly during lunch-hour mentorship sessions

Vocational Skills Training

We believe in empowering people with epilepsy to live independent and productive lives through:

  • Tailoring programs, currently using two sewing machines to train individuals and caregivers

  • Farming skills development, encouraging food security and income generation

  • Community members may also enroll in sewing courses at affordable fees, promoting inclusion and sustainability

Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School: Where Every Learner Belongs

Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School is a unique educational initiative by the Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation, established to ensure that every child—regardless of ability—has access to quality education in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Located in Chikwawa District, our school is built on the belief that education is a right, not a privilege. We recognize the challenges that learners with disabilities face, especially in rural areas, and have created a space where they can thrive academically and socially without fear of stigma or discrimination.

What Makes Us Different?

  • Learners with disabilities attend school for free

  • We provide a safe and stigma-free environment where all students are valued equally

  • Inclusive teaching methods that cater to diverse learning needs

  • A dedicated team of trained teachers and support staff focused on holistic development

  • Strong connection to health and counseling services through the Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation

Whether your child has epilepsy, a physical or learning disability, or is neurotypical, Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School is a place where every learner is welcomed, respected, and given the opportunity to succeed.
