At the Chifundo Epilepsy Foundation, we are dedicated to empowering individuals with epilepsy through a variety of comprehensive programs designed to provide support, raise awareness, and foster independence. Our programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of our community, ensuring that every person affected by epilepsy has access to the resources and care they need.
We run an Epilepsy Centre equipped to diagnose and treat individuals with epilepsy using professional tools like EEG (Electroencephalogram).
Through our clinics:
Patients receive free antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) near their homes
Over 600 patients have been treated, including 200 children now seizure-free and back in school
We partner with the Chikwawa District Health Office to ensure consistent drug supply and professional care
Epilepsy is often misunderstood in Malawi, leading to discrimination and stigma. Our awareness programs aim to change that by:
Partnering with schools, colleges, churches, and communities to educate people on epilepsy causes, triggers, and first aid
Conducting biweekly outreach sessions, reaching over 400 individuals monthly
Using media platforms (radio, SMS, TV, and social media) to reach a broader audience
Living with epilepsy can be emotionally challenging. That’s why we offer:
Confidential counseling sessions at our epilepsy centre
Home visits by professional psychologists, offering personalized support and guidance
Weekly three-hour sessions to promote mental well-being for patients and their caregivers
As part of our commitment to inclusive education, we established the Chifundo Inclusive Secondary School:
A safe and welcoming space for all learners, especially those with disabilities
Learners with disabilities attend for free
Focused on academic success, life skills, and self-worth in a stigma-free environment
Our mentorship initiative focuses on shaping confident, informed young people by:
Working with neurotypical learners in special schools
Educating youth (ages 10–13) on drug abuse, peer pressure, and healthy life choices
Reaching 200+ students monthly during lunch-hour mentorship sessions
We believe in empowering people with epilepsy to live independent and productive lives through:
Tailoring programs, currently using two sewing machines to train individuals and caregivers
Farming skills development, encouraging food security and income generation
Community members may also enroll in sewing courses at affordable fees, promoting inclusion and sustainability
